We read the fairy tale, while glowing coals9 p) a( ~5 E! p& s+ K
Builded its pictures. There before our eyes- v$ p j6 t( Y) m! j
We saw the vaulted hall of traceried stone
' {9 z! _; `- k- l3 k! g% r Uprear itself, the distant ceiling hung H/ V% S7 p1 L& m- G
With pendent stalactites like frozen vines;
' ]3 P* U/ x- t( s And all along the walls at intervals,+ Z* m- }* K3 `" @, i! U
Curled upwards into pillars, roses climbed,
2 x9 M) y( n4 ^% t, W: s* e2 q And ramped and were confined, and clustered leaves( t1 l$ {: a! C6 T& K4 ]
Divided where there peered a laughing face.
( ~! `7 r1 ~% } The foliage seemed to rustle in the wind,
1 _ k; `, ^9 h! P0 Q* k. Y A silent murmur, carved in still, gray stone.1 E- R) _3 c' L4 B* E) S4 F$ [
High pointed windows pierced the southern wall# R" k, M3 s3 B! X1 A/ k! c
Whence proud escutcheons flung prismatic fires
; O, i# F# J6 S# V g: p) X To stain the tessellated marble floor; G( p4 I1 j8 p$ [( ~9 n6 B1 |
With pools of red, and quivering green, and blue;4 f7 l4 y- k- d# Y+ }0 W
And in the shade beyond the further door,
+ p! }! }4 z0 ?3 _: e y Its sober squares of black and white were hid
7 o! ~. r$ u3 \# x+ q( V Beneath a restless, shuffling, wide-eyed mob
1 N( E" G+ t) n$ _# s3 P" b0 ]4 w Of lackeys and retainers come to view
9 V( B( L2 e q4 R# y The Christening.
# M, u5 {. q0 c A sudden blare of trumpets, and the throng
2 k9 A$ j' Q2 `. ^) s$ v7 x+ A* x About the entrance parted as the guests
2 z" _8 x6 h Z+ ^3 M% { Filed singly in with rare and precious gifts.- o/ a# u5 @; ]; n$ N) o0 T
Our eager fancies noted all they brought, _$ F' I7 Y* E) {& J& D7 F' C- h
The glorious, unattainable delights!1 |) u: @1 l5 P( }% d/ O
But always there was one unbidden guest* T( Q% q+ Q1 H7 f( W/ \% x* z* a
Who cursed the child and left it bitterness.
' ?/ Y" {0 [! ] The fire falls asunder, all is changed,
6 O3 v/ \# D0 n8 `$ s& |* K/ A I am no more a child, and what I see
9 @4 s% N" U8 F Is not a fairy tale, but life, my life.& R& K& x# J+ J: }! }
9 w# i% B0 R0 ^* w The gifts are there, the many pleasant things:
4 s9 N5 E5 k2 V Health, wealth, long-settled friendships, with a name
( Y' `5 R. `- Z" \: I* A Which honors all who bear it, and the power
. G" K; @/ u3 |. H$ Q s( x' V+ g Of making words obedient. This is much;
# q+ N# X/ ]8 z9 L5 J But overshadowing all is still the curse,, g0 Z1 z- z: I% E: M% E3 |8 S. G
That never shall I be fulfilled by love!7 L$ v% m; P9 O/ N# @
Along the parching highroad of the world
9 u H+ e* ]& [ No other soul shall bear mine company.
A" W7 q4 t; z/ `$ H2 O& I Always shall I be teased with semblances,, p* J1 @2 Q1 w5 t% M! n
With cruel impostures, which I trust awhile
1 {% V5 _/ H1 w$ h Then dash to pieces, as a careless boy' Q( j, W/ J- V+ v( r* F7 p
Flings a kaleidoscope, which shattering
4 {8 k# O( \9 R Strews all the ground about with coloured sherds./ P. n) S* q" \, @% p X
So I behold my visions on the ground
$ ?7 ^+ `5 u" {9 V9 p2 S$ L$ g No longer radiant, an ignoble heap
' n* W' u a0 E: s; ]6 S Of broken, dusty glass. And so, unlit,& c- Z; K3 I; n4 z2 s! ~, U' w
Even by hope or faith, my dragging steps; v4 l, j/ B; p( Y5 ~
Force me forever through the passing days.6 m0 _, c6 v* d- c' n8 |/ G
