  I learnt to write to you in happier days,
1 Y5 [0 c% c2 j2 S8 Z  And every letter was a piece I chipped. b$ ?: X$ j4 Z
  From off my heart, a fragment newly clipped
, l7 X- {- h( h1 m8 I2 G1 z  From the mosaic of life; its blues and grays,
" s! i! P; X' ?; c( S  Its throbbing reds, I gave to earn your praise.1 ~6 L5 _- U/ Z% H
  To make a pavement for your feet I stripped, `: j- m$ n0 Q& B+ {
  My soul for you to walk upon, and slipped
( m, }& r) [0 ~6 K% d6 ~. V. @* X  Beneath your steps to soften all your ways.
+ e) g* n' L& L( p- u! j  But now my letters are like blossoms pale
1 q7 ?# R) R2 j% ^  We strew upon a grave with hopeless tears.
- \! h; k( l# G0 Z  I ask no recompense, I shall not fail$ B1 F4 n) q, e: u5 v
  Although you do not heed; the long, sad years5 J) a) l: E; K. C8 I4 U) V" z6 C, _
  Still pass, and still I scatter flowers frail," U1 I/ D% b+ u) P: x# z+ @; X
  And whisper words of love which no one hears.3 U1 O. s1 v5 R: p% M
